Liliana Piskorska was born in 1988 and graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Toruń in 2013. Currently she is a PhD student at the Faculty of Fine Arts in the same city.
She focuses her artistic research on notions such as feminism and the idea that “The personal is political”, but she sees them from a perspective derived from posthumanism, ecofeminism and the situation of minorities. Her artistic activities have very analytical character; they are related to current social and cultural situation. She uses media ranging from sculpture and drawing to performance and happening; she very frequently uses herself and her own body to create works of art.

When in 2010 I found myself in an emergency situation when I needed the morning after pill, in Poland it was necessary to have a medical prescription to get one. In theory it was not a complicated procedure, especially for people with means to go to a private clinic, but in reality it meant one had to find a liberal doctor who would be willing to prescribe the pill. In the 24 hours period when I was trying to get the prescription, I went to 3 places, I called about 10 more and I was declined every time. I was told that ‘the doctor has certain standards’, that ‘he is not that kind of a doctor’. Eventually I was given a prescription from a gynecologist in a private clinic who agreed to give it to me without any payment for a visit so that I was not officially signed in as his patient.
I know that I was quite unlucky that night due to my lack of knowledge and not having appropriate contacts, many of my friends did not encounter so many problems when trying to get that prescription.
Even so, when I go back to that night it strikes me how current the situation remains now, especially in the light of latest events in Poland where just 2 months ago, a deeply conservative government won the election and its politicians have begun to show their disregard to democracy, freedom and basic human rights at an alarming speed.
